Gold Coast trainer David Kelly has his fingers crossed for a wet Doomben track to dry out sufficiently to enable his classy mare Kryptelon to start in the BDO Handicap.

Kelly has pencilled in a spring campaign in Sydney for Kryptelon who will have a barrier trial on her home track at the Gold Coast on Tuesday if the trainer pulls the pin on starting her on Saturday.

Kryptelon has won eight of her 28 starts but is only now beginning to fulfil the promise she showed early in her career.

"She's always had the ability but she's never quite made it at top grade until now," Kelly said.

"For some reason she's found a few lengths this campaign which she showed when she won the (Listed) Gai Waterhouse Classic at Ipswich.

"She's won before on a heavy track and her form suggests she can handle it but I don't think she really likes wet tracks any more.

"At this stage I'm not sure if she's running and I want to see the track dry out a bit more before I decide tomorrow if she'll run."

Kelly was a former heavyweight jockey in the Northern Rivers region of NSW before turning his hand to training several years ago.

He was hoping Kryptelon could win the Listed Ramornie Handicap (1200m) in his former home town of Grafton earlier this month but the daughter of Falvelon could only manage fifth to the Peter Snowden-trained Pinwheel.

"She was a bit stiff at Grafton," Kelly said.

"She was beaten less than two lengths after being held up for a run and even Peter Snowden said she was the unlucky runner in the race."

Kelly has picked out an unofficial barrier trial at the Gold Coast next Tuesday as a back-up for Kryptelon should he decide to scratch her from Doomben.

"I'd like to run her instead of giving her a barrier trial next week as she's headed to a Quality Handicap over 1300 metres on Wednesday week at Eagle Farm," he said.

"If she can race well there I'm thinking about sending her to Sydney for the better spring races.

"I think she's got the ability to measure up and there's a few Group races that look suitable for her down there."

Chris Munce will take over the riding duties on Kryptelon who has been ridden at her past two starts by Paul Hammersley.
