No Surprises To Come From Alberton Park
Liam Birchley isn't expecting any big surprises from promising filly Alberton Park who makes her comeback at Doomben following a training mishap which ended her Brisbane winter carnival campaign.
Alberton Park, the winner of two of her 11 starts which have also yielded six placings, was forced to the spelling paddock in April while being tested as a possible contender for the Group One Queensland Oaks (2400m) at Eagle Farm in June.
Birchley has a good opinion of the daughter of Group One winner Thorn Park but believes she will find her 1010-metre assignment too short in Saturday's Montrose Access Ownit Homes Handicap.
Alberton Park hasn't raced since finishing second to the Jason McLachlan-trained Bella Sirena over 1350 metres at Doomben on April 10.
Birchley had planned to step Alberton Park up in distance to the Listed Princess Stakes (1600m) at Eagle Farm two weeks later before she was hurt on a walking machine.
"She got injured on the walker which meant she had to go for a break," Birchley said.
"She hasn't been past 1400 metres yet but we were hoping she might stay and get a chance in the Oaks."
Birchley believes Alberton Park has the ability to win in better company but has warned she's not fully wound up and could struggle to keep in touch with the speedsters first-up.
"She's going well and has had a barrier trial but this should be too short for her," he said.
"She's been in work long enough and at this stage she's running."
Birchley is cautious about the recent wet weather and a heavy track rating.
He hasn't yet mapped out a spring campaign for Alberton Park who cost $NZ200,000 at New Zealand's Karaka sales.
"I'll see how she comes back this campaign and see what she does in her first couple of runs before I decide where she's headed," he said.
"I hadn't planned to take her interstate but that could easily change depending how she races."
After an impressive maiden victory at Doomben last November, Birchley threw Alberton Park in at the deep end at her next outing in the Listed Mode Stakes (1200m) at Doomben on December 5 but she could manage only 12th to Swiss Rose.
However she bounced back to her best form following a three-week break, winning over 1350 metres at Doomben on Boxing Day which encouraged Birchley to test her staying credentials for the winter.
