Melbourne Races Delayed Due To Weather Again

Monday’s meeting at Moonee Valley was indefinitely delayed after on-course stewards braced themselves for a storm to pass over the metropolitan track following the first race.

Stewards received information from the Bureau Of Meteorology shortly after midday warning that a storm cell was to cross over Moonee Valley around the start time of the second race.

The race was delayed before stewards gave the all-clear for the meeting to continue, with the second race run shortly after 1:15pm (EST).

The Bureau of Meteorology have predicted that 10mm of rain would fall in the Moonee Valley area and while the rain was strong, there was minimal electrical activity and the bad weather only briefly lingered over the track in stark contrast to the awful conditions witnessed at Flemington on Saturday.

Moonee Valley was rated a Heavy (9) prior to the storm and is yet to be downgraded by stewards.

Flemington’s ‘Super Saturday’ meeting was postponed following the running of the Group 1 Newmarket Handicap (1200m) after a freak hailstorm hit Melbourne metropolitan area.

Flemington received over 40mm of rainfall in a 30 minute period causing widespread flooding.
