Bid Spotter On Track For Tassie Double
Not content with his Hobart Cup victory, connections of Sydneysider Bid Spotter are confident the gelding is on target to claim a feature Tasmanian double in Launceston on Wednesday.
The Graeme Rogerson-trained five-year-old is favourite to add the $225,000 Launceston Cup (2400m) to his last-start win in the $300,000 Hobart Cup (2200m) earlier this month.
Bid Spotter remained in Tasmania after his Hobart success and has continued to please ahead of Wednesday's Group Three feature.
Rogerson's Sydney foreman Roger Elliott was "pretty confident" the son of Redoute's Choice would be hard to beat again following his half-length win at Hobart over local galloper Organised, with Davcon third.
"He's done really well (since the Hobart Cup), he's drawn a good barrier (eight) and we're really happy with him," Elliott said.
"Everything is in order with him."
Elliott was on track at Hobart when Bid Spotter raced to the biggest win of his career to date, but will watch Wednesday's race from Sydney with Rogerson to be on track at Launceston.
The two feature races during Tasmania's summer racing carnival had been a long-range plan for the Rogerson team with Bid Spotter.
"We talked about it in November last year and planned it, and that's what we've done," Elliott said.
"As long as he ran well in the Hobart Cup we were always planning to stay down there for this race as well."
Bid Spotter is the $4.80 favourite with TAB Sportsbet ahead of the Mick Kent-trained Red Buttons ($5.50).
The field of 16 plus two emergencies features 11 runners continuing on from the Hobart Cup.
One new addition will be the Darren Weir-trained Streaky Fella, a last-start winner over 2400m at Morphettville, who is on the third line of betting at $6.50.
Melbourne Cup-winning hoop Michael Rodd has stuck with Bid Spotter after partnering him to victory in Hobart.
Bid Spotter carried 54.5kg that day and will have two kilograms extra on Wednesday.
Elliott doesn't see that as a major concern.
"We always thought he would get a bit of weight but I think the 2400 metres will suit him better," he said.
Bid Spotter won the Listed Tatt's Club Cup at Randwick over 2400m in 2009.
Zacielo in 2004 was the last horse to complete the Hobart and Launceston Cups double.
